Objectives
As a result of reading and studying this chapter students will be able to:
- Identify the two categories of phonemes and describe how they are classified
- Name and explain the phonic elements or sound/spelling categories
- Identify the phonic elements that cause the most difficulty for students
- Describe the most useful syllable division principles and common syllable types
- Describe the two types of morphemes
- Identify the three languages from which the majority of morphemes in English originate
- Recognize common prefixes, suffixes, and Latin and Greek roots
