Objectives

As a result of reading and studying this chapter students will be able to:

• Describe the Three Tier System for selecting vocabulary to teach
• Identify the modified criteria for the Three Tier System for English-language learners
• Explain how word acquisition and categories of word knowledge can guide the selection of words on which to focus instruction

• Identify instructional strategies for developing in-depth word knowledge
