CHAPTER 11: SPECIFIC WORD INSTRUCTION
Objectives
As a result of reading and studying this chapter students will be able to:
- Identify research that has informed specific word instruction
- Describe the Three Tier System for selecting vocabulary to teach
- Identify the modified criteria for the Three Tier System for English-language learners
- Explain how word acquisition and categories of word knowledge can guide the selection of words on which to focus instruction
- Explain the concept of rich and robust vocabulary instruction
- Identify instructional strategies that use vocabulary that is contextualized in literature
- Identify instructional strategies for introducing specific vocabulary words
- Identify instructional strategies for developing in-depth word knowledge
- Identify ways to motivate students to extend vocabulary use outside of the classroom
- Identify when specific vocabulary words can be introduced or reviewed during a reading lesson
- Identify appropriate assessment and intervention for vocabulary knowledge
