CHAPTER 3: PRINT AWARENESS
Objectives
As a result of reading and studying this chapter students will be able to:
- Recognize that print awareness includes functions of print, conventions of print, and book conventions
- Recognize that children's ability to understand how print works comes through literacy-based interactions with adults and opportunities to apply their learning in a print-rich environment
- Identify the print knowledge/behaviors expected of a student by the end of Kindergarten
- Explain when and how print awareness should be assessed
- Give examples of formal and informal ways in which print awareness can be assessed
- Apply lessons for effective instruction of print awareness
- Identify intervention strategies for students who have difficulty with print awareness
